History of Denton County
Denton County was created by the Texas government in 1846, a short time after Texas became part of the United States. Pickneyville was the first county seat in Denton County. However, this only lasted for about two years, when a water shortage in the area forced the community to flee to Alton. Alton became the county seat for the next 10 years.
In the span of time Alton was county seat of Denton County real estate, it became quite a thriving little community, with many homes and businesses (including a blacksmith, doctors, lawyers and the Denton County Land District's headquarters). Even though Alton had become a bustling city, the residents of Denton County wanted to change the county seat again so that it was more centrally located. The town of Alton moved and was renamed Denton in 1857.
Prior to the Civil War, Denton County was a ranching and farming community. When the Civil War came through the area, the strong and healthy men were called away to fight, leaving the ranches and farms vulnerable to Indian attacks.
The end of the Civil War brought a renewed prosperity to Denton County real estate, infusing the community with more and more immigrants. The farms in the area that were originally set up to only grow food for their inhabitants quickly changed to cotton and wheat farms, bringing much needed money into the area.
Denton County also became an educational center for Texas, with the establishment of North Texas Normal College (now known as University of North Texas) in 1890 and Girls College of Industrial Arts (now known as Texas Women's University) in 1901.
The construction of Interstate 35 East in the '50s, Interstate 35 West in the '70s and DFW International Airport in 1974 helped transform Denton County into a major transportation hub in the west. This also made Denton County real estate the fastest growing in the US throughout the 1970s, 1980s and into the 1990s. By the turn of the 21st century, the main economy in northern Denton County continued to be ranching and farming while southern Denton County enjoyed a huge surge in commercial as well as industrial growth.
