History of Coppell
The City of Coppell is a fairly young city, as it was incorporated in 1955, but its roots go back much farther. The first settlement of the area began around 1832 with the establishment of the farming community of Grapevine Springs. Around this time, settlers began moving into what is now known as the City of Coppell. The town was originally named Gibbs. But, in 1890, the name was changed to Coppell to honor George Coppell for his involvement in bringing the railroad to the community.
The little town grew and, in 1936, another landmark came to town. The building of the Grapevine Creek Park brought more growth to the town, doubling business and population in the Coppell real estate market. The park included a half mile of walkways, three bridges and a dam set among groves of oak, pecan and cottonwood trees.
Coppell continued to grow slowly but steadily and, in 1955, the town was incorporated into the City of Coppell. At this time, zoning was established and, eventually, the city expanded into southern Denton County. With the construction of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, part of which lies within Coppell city limits, more growth came to the city. Both business and population more than doubled between the years of 1981 and 1984. In 1984, a 16.3 million dollar improvement bond was granted. In the next seven years, the city would increase in population alone from just less than 4,000 to over 16,000 residents.
