History of Highland Park

Highland Park vacant land was purchased in 1889 by a group of investors from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, known as the Philadelphia Place Land Association, for an average price of $377.00 an acre, for a total of $500,000.  In the beginning, an agent Henry Exall, wanted to make the area beside Turtle Creek as Philadelphia Place, which would be exclusive homes themed on parkland spots in Philadelphia.  Henry Exall dammed Turtle Creek and laid roads.  The daming of Turtle Creek formed Exall Lake.  Years later, he began breeding horses on his farm. Exall Lake was a popular place for residents of Dallas to picnic in the 1890s. .

John Armstrong's  meatpacking business was sold in 1906.  Armstrong  invested his fortune in a portion of the former Philadelphia Place land to develop it under the name of Highland Park.  Armstrong chose the name due to its location on high land that had a beautiful view of downtown Dallas.  A landscape designer, Wilbur David Cook,  was hired to create the layout.  20% of the land was put aside for parks.  A second development in Highland Park was developed in 1910.

Highland Park Real Estate - Fred and Linda LanhamLocated in the heart of Highland Park, Highland Park Village Shopping Center is now under the management of Regent Entertainment.  The Village theater specializes in a mix of current, mainstream film releases as well as cinematic adventures more often thought of as arthouse films.  It's a great place to catch the unusual movie and then go window shopping or dine in one of the upscale eateries in the shopping center.   The Village Theater has gone through many changes since 1935 when it first opened.   The lovely Mediterranean Spanish-style building is still housed today and is still a most terrific sight.

The City of Highland Park provides many useful links for its citizens, such as information on utility services, telephone numbers for town administration, tax information, newspapers and other miscellaneous services, library and park information.
