Rockwall History
The area of Rockwall was first settled in the 1840s by the Boydstun family who were soon followed by others.  The community of Rockwall was founded in April 1854 with 40 acres donated by Elijah Elgin to start a town.

The story of the Rockwall name is as unique as the city.  In 1851, while trying to dig a water well, for the home he and his family were going to build, Mr. Wade hit what appeared to be a possible stone formation.  Upon further inspection, he found a long "rock wall" running under the earth.  Thus, the name Rockwall was born.  Evidence of this rock wall system remains.  In fact, it spiders out at several points within the county.

In 1873, the state legislature created Rockwall County from a portion of the County of Kaufman.  Rockwall then became the seat of the county.  A year later the town incorporated, becoming the City of Rockwall.  The railroad came to the city in 1886, making it a major point of shipping.  Wells College was opened in 1893.

The city continued to grow during the 1920s-1930s.  The city's population was declining until after WW II, when growth returned to Rockwall.  Growth was slow and steady until the combined influences of the opening of the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, which brought growth to the entire Dallas region, Lake Ray Hubbard's construction and the job opportunities awaiting folks in Dallas.
